Project Brief
A meaningful integration of design and identity to further enhance densification of a vibrant diagonal street in Chicago's Logan Square.
This project addresses a parking lot and an empty retail building along the “Milwaukee Cultural Corridor”. Running parallel to the Milwaukee Ave is the elevated blue-line while the street itself supports traffic slicing through the cities grid. Implementing affordable housing and additional amenities aims to support the corridors cultural community and promote the entertainment scene — centered around Concord and Congress Theater. The project partners with The City of Chicago Planning Department to develop a mixed-use proposal that better utilizes 85,000 square feet of abandoned space in the heart of Logan Square.
The emotional use of a wall is often overlooked as a simple means of dividing and obstructing space. Here walls assume more meaning, they act through form and exaggeration yielding scale and proportion, in reference to the human body. Exploring formal rhythm and repetition reflects a musical influence as a symphony that animates the public street.
Timber is used to bring inside warmth and texture; the natural material livens up shops, performance and living spaces through fabricated panels and finishes. These panels serve as structural wall systems and cladding finishes that can be made offsite and assembled onsite reducing overall time and labor. As the Douglas Fir ages under UV exposure and weathering, the buildings exterior will gradually change in appearance and speak to the natural process as it adapts to a Midwest climate.

Apartment units
In response to the affordable housing crisis, these apartment units provide equitable living standards, favorable amenities and improved privacy while ensuring safety and universal design.
Totaling 130 units, the apartment stack evolves from studio apartments to 3 bedroom dwellings, with angles resulting from the sites given geometry. In design, each unit satisfies code requirements, including but not limited to, unobstructed natural light in living spaces and life safety measures during potential fires or other evacuation crisis's. Each unit features sizable bedrooms, kitchens and access to living space, and amenities are shared on the ground floor and rooftop as means of extending living space. A gym, lounge and cooking space can be shared, fostering community and close proximity to basic needs. The existing alleyway services the units (in addition to middle housing and music school) and courtyards range from private to public between buildings furthering a mission of blending living space inside and out.LOW-RISE HOUSING
The missing middle represents a housing typology under valued in many cities, these units offer a medium between single family homes and apartment multi-units.
This housing typology is important to address in a city of dense urbanism and limited access to privacy. Below, the buildings are lined with storefronts and retail space along Milwaukee Ave, above units take in views with limits of being viewed. These units are accessed from staircases between 2 and 3 flats from the street and back courtyard. This option of having two means of egress was achieved using walls as an ordering system and staircases as an alternating infill to blur the front and back facades.
